MVM launches a 185 billion HUF grid development: room for 1,400 MW of new renewables

MVM Démász Áramhálózati Kft. and MVM Émász Áramhálózati Kft. have started the "RRF 2" grid development programme: 184.8 billion HUF of investment, of which 138.6 billion HUF is non-repayable EU support from Hungary's Recovery and Resilience Plan. The goal is to make room for about 1,400 MW of new weather-dependent generation – mostly solar – on the distribution grid.

What is being built

  • New and upgraded high-, medium- and low-voltage lines; new substations and transformer stations, capacity expansion of existing ones.
  • More supply points (tapping-point densification) and higher network capacity.
  • Modern regulation solutions and supply-security measures.
  • Digital grid: an IoT-based communication and grid-management system with more than 200,000 endpoints, digital asset management, optical network upgrades, remotely operated pole switches, fault indicators.

Project ID: RRF-GS-6.6.1-26-2026-00002. The programme is aligned with the national energy strategy and the EU REPowerEU plan, and continues the DSOs' earlier grid and smart-metering developments. By August 2026 weather-dependent generators reached 9.2 GW of installed capacity in Hungary, 8.8 GW of it solar.

What it means for solar park owners and storage projects

Grid development opens the door, but it does not change the economics on site. Three points we see in our own projects:

  • Connection capacity remains scarce for years: 1,400 MW of new capacity meets a multiple of that in applications. A battery storage system lets a park use the existing connection better – shifting production, holding the export limit, avoiding curtailment.
  • Modern regulation on the DSO side means stricter technical requirements at the connection point: reactive power, voltage support, controllability. Storage with proper control handles these – and earns on the aFRR market in the meantime.
  • Digitalised networks (200,000+ endpoints, remote switching) will reward sites that can be controlled remotely and documented precisely – exactly what a local controller like the BST Control Box provides.
