Energy storage operation and maintenance (O&M)

A battery storage system earns money only while it runs – and runs well. BST Solar operates industrial and utility-scale storage in Hungary: remote supervision, state-of-health tracking, market operation through an aggregator, preventive maintenance and the annual reports the grant programmes require. For systems we built and for systems built by others.

Why operation decides the return on a storage system

Two storage systems of the same size and price can differ by 30–40 % in annual revenue. The difference is not the battery – it is how it is operated: whether it charges in the cheapest hours and discharges in the dearest, whether it is available for aFRR when the TSO calls, whether a tripped PCS is restarted in minutes or on Monday morning, and whether cell imbalance is corrected before it eats capacity.

What energy storage operation includes

Remote supervision 24/7Live monitoring of PCS, BMS, HVAC, fire system and metering through the BST Control Box and the manufacturers' portals; alarms to our on-call engineer, not to a mailbox.
Market operationDaily schedules from HUPX day-ahead prices, peak-shaving limits for the demand charge, PV self-consumption logic and aFRR activation through an aggregator – the controller executes, we check the result every morning.
State of healthMonthly capacity and resistance trend per rack, cell-balancing checks, warranty-relevant data kept in order so a claim is never lost on paperwork.
Preventive maintenanceAnnual site visit: thermal imaging of DC and AC connections, torque check, coolant and filter service of the liquid-cooling and HVAC, fire-system test, firmware updates in a maintenance window.
Fault responseRemote restart and diagnosis first; on-site within an agreed time with spare PCS modules, contactors and sensors from our stock; manufacturer escalation handled by us.
Reporting and complianceMonthly revenue and availability report; the annual renewable-share proof for the Jedlik Ányos grant (75 % rule); data for the DSO, the aggregator and the insurer.

Service levels

We offer three levels; the right one depends on whether the system runs on a C&I site with its own staff or stands alone on a field next to a solar park.

Which systems we operate

Our engineers commission and service ComAp-controlled systems with CATL, EVE, Sunnic and Delta batteries and Sinexcel, Kehua and Delta PCS – the equipment in our own catalogue. We also take over systems built by others: the first step is a technical audit (protection settings, BMS parameters, communication, warranty status), then a 3-month trial period before the long-term contract.

  • C&I cabinets from 100 kWh (peak shaving, self-consumption, backup) on industrial and agricultural sites
  • Containerised systems from 1 to 50 MWh next to solar parks – hybrid PV parks with grid-connection limits
  • Hybrid microgrids with gensets, where the storage also provides black start and island operation
  • Grant-funded systems (Jedlik Ányos programme) with the annual 75 % renewable-charging proof

How a takeover works

1. AuditDocumentation, settings, communication links and warranty status reviewed; a report with the risks and quick wins within two weeks.
2. ConnectionThe site is connected to our supervision (Control Box or manufacturer portal), alarms routed to the on-call engineer, schedules and limits set.
3. Trial and contractThree months of operation with monthly reports, then a long-term contract with agreed availability and reaction times.

Frequently asked questions

What does energy storage operation cost?

Monitoring-only service for a C&I cabinet starts at a low fixed monthly fee; full O&M for a containerised system is usually priced per installed MWh per year and typically stays within 1–2 % of the investment, which the revenue uplift from proper market operation more than covers.

Can you operate a system that BST did not build?

Yes. After a technical audit and a three-month trial period we take over systems from other installers, provided the manufacturer gives us access to the BMS and PCS and the documentation is complete enough to set protections safely.

How do you prove the 75 % renewable share for the grant?

The controller logs every charging interval with its source (PV, grid) and the metering data; we compile the annual statement in the format the funding body expects and flag during the year if the share is drifting below the limit.

What happens when the PCS trips at night?

The alarm reaches the on-call engineer within minutes; most trips are diagnosed and restarted remotely. If a site visit is needed, the agreed reaction time applies and we bring the likely spare parts from our stock.

Do you also handle aFRR participation?

We prepare the prequalification measurements, set up the controller for the aggregator's setpoints and monitor the activations; the market contract itself is between the owner and the aggregator.

How long does a lithium iron phosphate storage system last?

Manufacturers specify 6 000–8 000 full cycles or 15–20 years to 70–80 % remaining capacity. Real lifetime depends on temperature, depth of discharge and balancing – exactly what operation controls.
