What is an industrial energy storage system?
An industrial energy storage system (BESS – battery energy storage system) is a lithium iron phosphate battery with a power converter (PCS), a battery management system (BMS), thermal management and a controller (EMS), installed at a company site or next to a power plant. It charges when electricity is cheap or produced on site, and discharges when electricity is expensive, when the site peak would raise the demand charge, or when the grid operator pays for flexibility. Unlike a home battery it is sized in hundreds of kilowatt-hours to tens of megawatt-hours and connected at low or medium voltage.
The three system types
| Type | Size | Where it fits | Examples in our catalogue |
|---|---|---|---|
| All-in-one C&I cabinet | 100–500 kWh per cabinet, 50–250 kW | Factories, cold stores, farms, logistics, retail – indoor or outdoor, LV connection, peak shaving and PV self-consumption | EVE T231 261 kWh, Delta C Series, Sunnic SNES125, CATL EnerOne+ |
| Container with separate PCS | 1–7 MWh per container, 0.5–3.5 MW | Larger sites, solar parks, grid-scale plants; MV connection via transformer; aFRR, arbitrage, hybrid PV parks | CATL TENER, EVE Mr. Giant, Sunnic EnerX + Sinexcel / Kehua / Delta PCS |
| Skid / MV station | 3–7 MW blocks | Utility-scale plants where PCS and MV transformer arrive pre-assembled to shorten site work | Kehua BCS skids, Delta PCS3450/PCST5500, Sinexcel 20 ft MV station |
How to size an industrial storage system
Sizing starts from data, not from catalogue sizes: a year of 15-minute load data from the site, the PV production profile if there is one, the contracted capacity and tariff, and the grid-connection limit. From these, four questions decide the size:
Our payback calculator applies these rules with 2026 Hungarian tariff and market data; for a binding design we run the simulation on your actual 15-minute data.
What an industrial storage system costs in 2026
Battery prices fell again in 2025–2026; today the battery is less than half of the project. For a 0.5 MW / 1 MWh all-in-one system we calculate with roughly 240 000 EUR turnkey, i.e. about 230 EUR per kWh. The breakdown below is from our 2026 projects:
| Item | Share | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Battery cabinets / containers with PCS and BMS | 55–60 % | LFP, liquid-cooled; 35 000 EUR per 261 kWh cabinet in 2026 |
| Transport, duty, EPR | 10–12 % | From China by sea; 2.7 % duty plus environmental fee |
| Foundations, cabling, LV/MV switchgear | 15–20 % | Higher for MV-connected containers with a transformer |
| Control (BST Control Box), metering, design, permits, commissioning | 10–12 % | Includes grid-connection procedure and SCADA integration |
Containerised systems above 2 MWh come in at 180–220 EUR/kWh turnkey; the MV transformer and the longer DSO procedure are the main differences. Grants of 30–50 % (Jedlik Ányos programme) apply to the full eligible cost.
How an industrial storage system earns money
- System usage fee (demand charge): lowering the contracted capacity by shaving peaks – 15 924 Ft per kW per year on the E.ON medium-voltage tariff in 2026; 200 kW less is 3.2 M Ft a year
- HUPX arbitrage and PV self-consumption: charging in the cheap hours or from the roof, discharging in the 17–21 h peak – the capturable spread is 150–250 €/MWh on a typical 2026 day, see our live price page
- aFRR reserve through an aggregator: 12 600–18 400 Ft per kW per year net to the owner at 2026 MAVIR prices
- Avoided curtailment and negative prices for sites with PV: energy that would be wasted or cost money is stored instead
- Backup and island operation: avoided downtime, less genset running – not a tariff line, but often the decisive argument on a production site
Stacked, these give 20–32 M Ft a year on a 96 M Ft system – a 3–5-year payback at market prices and 2–3 years with a grant. The full calculation with sources is in our payback article; the calculator lets you change every assumption.
Grid connection, permits and control
Behind-the-meter storage on a company site usually needs a notification to the DSO and a metering-point standardisation; MV-connected systems need a connection plan, protection settings approved by the DSO and – for grid-scale plants – MEKH registration. Grid-forming PCS and ComAp controllers meet EN 50549 and VDE-AR-N 4110, which the Hungarian DSOs reference.
The controller is what turns hardware into revenue: it measures the connection point, PV and state of charge every second, applies the limits, runs the daily price schedule and executes aggregator setpoints. On our projects this is the BST Control Box, built on ComAp InteliNeo.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between an industrial and a home energy storage system?
Size, voltage and purpose. A home battery is 5–20 kWh on single-phase low voltage for self-consumption; an industrial system is 100 kWh to tens of MWh, three-phase LV or MV, and earns from demand charges, market prices and grid services. It also needs a grid-connection procedure, protection coordination and professional operation.
How long does an industrial battery last?
LFP cells are rated for 6 000–8 000 full cycles, which at one cycle a day is 15–20 years to 70–80 % remaining capacity. Temperature management and correct operation decide whether the rating is reached.
Is an industrial storage system safe?
LFP chemistry is thermally stable, and industrial systems carry cell-level monitoring, liquid cooling, gas detection and aerosol or water-mist suppression certified to UL 9540A / IEC 62619. Siting, clearances and the fire-service consultation are part of our design.
How much space does it need?
A 261 kWh all-in-one cabinet is about 1.4 × 1.3 m on the ground; a 5 MWh container is a standard 20-foot unit plus clearances and the PCS/transformer area. Outdoor placement on a concrete foundation is standard.
Can I get a grant for an industrial storage system?
The Jedlik Ányos programme funded 30–50 % of industrial storage in 2026; the call is currently suspended and a next round is expected. Our grant page tracks the status and the conditions.
Which manufacturers do you work with?
CATL, EVE and Sunnic for batteries, Sinexcel, Kehua and Delta for PCS, ComAp for control – 35 products with datasheets in our catalogue, chosen for European certification and service presence.
